The original watercolor was created from numerous layers of her life experiences. Here are her reflections on this multi-layered creative process:
My Umbrella Man has a number of layers of meaning. On the first level, this watercolor and the Pink Princess are based on my daughter and her prom date as my muses. Also, the tuxedo-wearing gentleman holding the umbrella is how I see my husband's charming Southern ways.
On deeper levels, I spent a lot of time with one of Peter Max's original variations on his techno-color Umbrella Man. I also Loved the Son of Man painting by Magritte in the Thomas Crown Affair too. Lastly, Picasso's Blue Period and physical abuse of the women closest to him hurts my heart. So I wanted to make something beautiful in my own favorite palette of watercolor blues. The rise of the feminine. Love conquers All. So yes, it all comes together in this little blue dress and makes me laugh, cry and sigh all at the same time.
So wear it well...-Erica S. Elliott
